The teachers of the Walnut Hills English Department believe that reading is an integral part of a student’s education, and it is our goal to communicate our joy in reading books of all types. While we acknowledge that reading for school involves a unique set of needed skills, we also understand that reading for pleasure is perhaps more important to becoming a life-long reader. Essentially, we want to promote students’ pure joy of the stimulating, exciting, stress-free experience of reading. Questions? Contact one of the English department co-chairs:

English classes will use the summer reading selections during the school year.In order to foster relationships between students through a variety of activities such as small-group and whole-class book talks, Socratic seminars, literature circles, digital discussions, or book-based ice breakers, some teachers may devote an early writing assignment to the analysis and review of these summer books. Others may give students the option to use these selections for a focused research paper later in the year.
